The Discover Barents 2020 Photography Competition is on!


The theme of the competition 2020 is the Coronavirus impact on Barents. How has the pandemic affected your life and surroundings? Grab your camera and capture the changes!


2017 Winner "The Milkyway" by Vitaly Istomin

The photo contest was initiated by the County of Kainuu (Finland) in 2017, during their leadership of the Barents Regional Council. The theme of the first Barents Photography Competition was Barents nature, and the contest was a big success. The second time the competition was held in 2019, with the theme “Barents youth”. The County administrative board of Västerbotten (Sweden), chairing the Barents Regional Council in 2019-2021, continues the competition in 2020 and hopes that it will become a biannual event circulating between chairing regions and implemented by them.

The competition period is November 16, 2020 – January 15, 2021 (extended until March 19), after which an international jury will select the winners. Participate in the competition by submitting a maximum of 2 pictures to the competition website Remember that the image must be shot in the Barents region, and that the photographs may not include any identifiable person(s) without their consent. Prizes will be awarded as follows:
The I Prize: 1.200 Euros
The II Prize: 850 Euros
The III Prize: 600 Euros

Remember to share your pictures on social media - in addition to the three best pictures, the most liked image on Instagram under the hashtag #barents2020 will be announced as the winner of the general vote and rewarded with an honorable mention!

The overall goal of the competition is the developing and strengthening cross-border co-operation in the Barents region, as well as support joint promotion of the Barents region and make it more visible.
