Meet our intern for autumn 2018!

12.9.2018

Starting from this week, Anna Kuznetsova will act as an intern at the International Barents Secretariat

How did you become interested in working at the International Barents Secretariat?

I was familiar with some organizations acting in the Barents region before I became an IBS intern. I took part in some events organized by the Barents Regional Youth Council. In Syktyvkar I worked with Arctic and Barents student exchange programs. Besides, my research is connected with Arctic and Finno-Ugric peoples. This spring I saw a call for the intern position at the IBS on Facebook and decided to apply as I would like to know more about Barents cooperation, to get new materials for my PhD thesis, to meet the experts and to obtain new professional skills.

Tell us about your background

I was born in the North of Russia, in Komi Republic. My grandfather was Komi and he spoke some Komi to me. So can I personally see the problems of small languages which are not very popular and spoken rarely. This was one of the reasons why I have decided to dedicate my research to indigenous peoples. I obtained a Specialist degree in International Relations and a Master degree in History in Syktyvkar. After that I have decided to continue my research on a PhD level and nowadays I am a PhD student at the University of Tartu and the Institute of Language, Literature and History of Russian Academy of Sciences.

What does your work include at the IBS?

As I am a newcomer, this week I study the documents and electronic systems of the organization. Updating the website, working with social media, assisting in organizing the events and meetings will be among my responsibilities.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I like travelling and hiking. I believe Norway and Kirkenes particularly is a very good place for this. I would like to explore Norway; I have already been to some places here (Oslo, Tromsø, Nesna, Trondheim and amazingly beautiful Lofoten Islands) and I wish I could travel around Norway more.

I also adore doing sports. While many people are enjoying the last days of warm sunny weather, I am already waiting for winter as I enjoy skiing and ice-skating a lot.
