Prevention of infectious diseases became one of the main topics of the meeting. As it was noted, there are different approaches to the HIV therapy and care: in the Nordic countries it is rather regarded as a chronic illness, which people can live with if it diagnosed in the early phase and therapy is started immediately, while in Russia HIV is often diagnosed at very advanced and comorbid stages and hardly cedes to treatment.
The JWGHS meeting took note of the resolution made by the Steering Committees of the Barents HIV/AIDS and TB Programmes, which proposed merging of this two Programmes, and decided to support the proposal. In 2019, arrangements for the newly established Barents HIV/TB Programme will be commenced. The resolution submitted to the JWGHS Meeting by the Steering Committees of the Barents HIV/AIDS and TB Programme suggested three areas of action for the future: implementation of patient-centred approaches in HIV and TB care, capacity building among professionals, and exchange of best practices and information.
The use of telemedicine, which has been implemented in Komi for 10 years already, was marked among good practices.
In addition, a New Programme “Rural Health for Barents” was proposed to be implemented by the Working Group.
