25 years of fruitful cross-border university cooperation in the North

Panel «Northern Universities as Regional Development Centres» held in Arkhangelsk

The events gathered key contributors to the development of international academic collaboration in the North and became a platform for analyzing the accumulated experience during the past 25 years of cooperation and making plans for the future.

The highlight was the panel «Northern Universities as Regional Development Centres» featuring the rectors of NArFU and UiT, a representative from the Northern State Medical University, the president of the UArctic network consortium as well as diplomats from Russia, the Norwegian Embassy in Moscow and local officials. The discourse of the panel meeting revolved around the Northern universities’ role in Arctic development, their best practices of interaction with authorities and expert contribution to national-level decision making during the last decades. The panel was followed by the official conferral of the NArFU Honorary Doctor title to UArctic President Lars Kullerud.

Another memorable point during the jubileum events in Arkhangelsk was the presentation of the collective monograph “Convergence: Norway and Russia in 1814-1917” (published in Russian in 2017) that took place on the plenar session of the 5th International conference for young scholars, “The Russian North and the Arctic:  basic issues of the past and present”.  The monograph (originally published in Norwegian in 2014) is the result of the Norwegian-Russian mega-project in history “Neighbourly Asymmetry. Norway and Russia. 1814-2015” (2008-2015). The book was written by a team of Norwegian and Russian historians and is based on a vast number of sources from Russian and Norwegian archives.

The presentation of the collective monograph was made by the group of the project participants,  lead by professor Jens Petter Nielsen (UiT). Professors Andrei V. Repnevskiy (NArFU), Vladislav I. Goldin (NArFU), Victoria V. Tevlina (UiT and NArFU) and Aleksei A. Komarov (UiT and Russian Academy of Sciences) also took part in the presentation. They have also played a leading role during the 25 years of cooperation between the two universities.

The days of celebration devoted to 25th anniversary of cooperation concluded with a concert and an official meeting between the UiT and NArFU representatives, where the partners compared notes and discussed the prospects of bilateral cooperation for years to come.
