Last year quite many celebrations devoted to 25th anniversary of Barents Cooperation were held throughout the region. Northern Arctic Federal University (NArFU) also hosted celebrations in Arkhangelsk in November especially marking the long-term bilateral partnership with the Tromsø University - The Arctic University of Norway (UiT).

The 50th meeting of theWGE took place in Skellefteå, 13-15 November 2018, with 30 participants from Russia, Norway, Finland and Sweden.

Julia Bobina will be taking care of Maria Dianova’s duties as Climate, Environment and Hot Spots Adviser at the International Barents Secretariat during her maternity leave.

Several events on climate and environment were held in Arkhangelsk during the last week. Launch of a new climate project was followed by the meeting on Barents environmental Hot Spots. In addition, Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO) held several meetings on prospective environment and energy projects with municipalities of the region, Energy Efficiency Center and other stakeholders.

Norway handed over the Chairmanship of the Working Group on Environment to Sweden during the Ministerial meeting in Vadsø. Concluding the Norwegian Chairmanship the main results of the work during the past two years were presented. One of these is the further elimination of the Barents Environmental Hot Spots in the Russian part of the Barents Region. Three new hot spots are now excluded from the list. The Swedish Chairmanship will further work on exclusion of the Barents Environmental Hot Spots, follow-up the “Barents 2050” and the Action Plan on Climate Change, continue emphasizing regional cooperation and finalize the Strategy for Protection of Intact Forest

As the most wonderful time of the year is coming, we, sitting in the cozy office decorated to celebrate Christmas, decided to collect information about Christmas and New Year traditions of the Barents countries.

The Meeting discussed the Barents Programmes on HIV/AIDS and TB, the new programme "Rural Health in the Barents region" and collaboration on Children and Youth at Risk.

An International Session on Cooperation in the Arctic was held during the 7th Murmansk International Business Week in mid-November, moderated by the Head of the International Barents Secretariat Tomas Hallberg.
