5th Barents Parliamentarian Conference in Luleå, May 18, 2011
The growing global demand for raw materials makes the future look very bright for the Barents Region, said Swedish Minister of Trade, Eva Bjorling, when speaking at the 5th Barents Parliamentarian Conference in Luleå, May 18, 2011.
Minister Bjorling also made it clear that it is only the protection of the fragile eco-systems and by finding common transport solutions uniting the region with world markets, that can make the region benefit from its competitive advantages. These issues are also the top priorities of the Swedish Chairmanship of the Barents Euro-Arctic Council, 2009-2011.
In his opening speech, Per Westerberg, Speaker of the Swedish Parliament, urged the participants to make efficient use of the conference in influencing national governments.
Valentina Pivnenko, Chair of the Committee for Northern Issues of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, has for many years played a key role in Northern issues and especially pointed out the importance of parliamentarian cooperation in providing political foundation for acting together in fields of common concern and interest across borders.
Some 40 national and regional parliamentarians met in Luleå, 18-20 May, to come together on political priorities for actions in the Barents Region. In addition, the latest facts on developments in the Region were provided by experts on environment, industry and commerce, indigenous entrepreneurship and infrastructure.
This is the fifth time that the Barents Parliamentarians meet. Over time the meeting has come to play an important role for politicians and experts to exchange information and views. This time Barents Parliamentarians was hosted by the Swedish Parliament as part of the Swedish Chairmanship of the Barents-Euro Arctic Council, 2009-2011. Karin Astrom, Member of the Swedish Parliament Chaired the Conference.
The Barents Parliamentarians meet every other year. Next time it will be held in Norway as part of the Norwegian Barents Euro-Arctic Chairmanship, 2011-2013.
