The Committee of Senior Officials of the Barents Euro-Arctic Council had their first meeting for the year 2017. The meeting was held in Murmansk, on board the nuclear icebreaker Lenin, which nowadays operates as a museum.

The meeting was opened by the First Deputy Governor of the Murmansk Region Alexey Tyukavin. In addition to the reports of the Chairs of both the CSO and the Regional Committee, the Working Group of Indigenous Peoples and the Barents Sports Committee gave presentations.

The CSO Chair as well as the RC Chair have an intensive spring ahead with lots of Barents-related events. The next high-level event, "Arctic - territory of Dialogue", will be held in Arkhangelsk on 29-30 of March. The Russian BEAC Chairmanship is also assisting in the organization of the 1st Barents Indigenous Peoples` Summit in Moscow on 28 April.

The Barents Sports Committee is an organization working in the field of sports in the Barents region. The Committee is a fine example on how cross-border cooperation brings together people living the region. Each year the Committee organizes the Barents Games, which are held in one of the four Barents countries with thousands of young athletes participating. The Norwegian Barents Secretariat is the main source for funding for the Barents Sports Committee.

Also the new communication plan of the International Barents Secretariat as well as other administrative documents were discussed in the meeting.

The CSO members enjoyed the wintery Murmansk and the lovely Russian cuisine!
